If you’ve ever spent April in Catalonia, you know Sant Jordi is something special.
Every April 23rd, the streets of Barcelona and cities across Catalonia fill with book stalls, roses, and people celebrating love and culture.
Inspired by the legend of Saint George and the dragon, the tradition blends literature, romance, and local pride. People gift books and roses to loved ones, making it one of the most unique cultural celebrations in Europe.
And this year, we’re joining the festivities in style!
What’s Sant Jordi about?
The legend of Sant Jordi tells the story of a knight who saved a town from a fearsome dragon that demanded regular human sacrifices in exchange for not burning the town to ashes (yeah, that’s next level taxation and negotiation).
This grim arrangement continued until the chosen victim was the king’s daughter. The king’s knights were called upon to face the beast and one succeeded… Sant Jordi!
After he defeated the dragon, red roses sprang from the blood spilled on the ground. The knight picked one and gifted it to the princess, a gesture that became the symbol of the celebration.
This date of April 23rd also honors the legacy of William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes, two of the most influential writers in history, as the first passed away and the second was buried on that calendar date, both in 1616 (though in different calendar systems). The tradition of gifting books on this day comes as a tribute to them.
Today, in a way, Sant Jordi is the Catalan equivalent of Valentine’s Day, but with books, roses, and dragons. Yes, much cooler, and with much more history.
Since Barcelona is our home, this year we decided to celebrate Sant Jordi with not one, not two, but three activations across the app and the city.

The Day Date with Flaixbac in Barcelona
Sant Jordi is best experienced in the streets, where the real magic happens… although yes, it’s quite packed and hard to move sometimes.
This year, we’re excited to be part of the celebration with Flaixbac, one of Catalonia’s most popular radio stations. On April 23rd, you’ll find us at the Flaixbac Sant Jordi stand on Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona.
We’ll be running a live event with our partner where our local users can spin an exclusive Venga wheel to win prizes like:

It’s also a great opportunity for us to meet the community on such a special day.

From April 13 to April 27, every new user in Spain who signs up and verifies their account on the Venga app is automatically entered into a crazy giveaway.
Ok that’s cool, but “what is the prize?” you might ask.

The Exclusive In-App Digital Hunt
Finally, as not the whole Venga community can be present in Barcelona for Sant Jordi, or reside in Spain to enter the giveaway, we brought a new Easter egg hunt into the Venga app.
And this time, it’s not Catalan food, it’s not the Tió de Nadal… it’s the dragon himself hiding there.
As mentioned earlier, the legend of Sant Jordi tells the story of a dragon, a hero, and roses that grew from the dragon’s blood. Well, we twisted the story a bit by giving the spotlight to the dragon to share some of his memories with the community. Ok it's not his real memories, but hey, it’s his time to shine.
So, any new or existing user who verifies their account during the Hunt unlocks access to it and can start looking for six hidden memories scattered throughout the app.
As always, each one unlocks a reward. Catch them all and boom: 20 USDC!
The whole experience is designed to be fun, a bit mysterious, honour the Sant Jordi tradition, and encourage users to explore everything the Venga app has to offer.
The hunt already started on April 13 and will run for several weeks. It’s our way of welcoming all new users to Venga and celebrating Sant Jordi at the same time.
