Learn about Bitcoin

Bitcoin (BTC) is a decentralized digital currency powered by blockchain technology, allowing users to send and receive payments directly without relying on banks or governments. Introduced in 2008 by an anonymous creator known as Satoshi Nakamoto, through its whitepaper titled “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System”, Bitcoin officially launched on January 3, 2009, with the mining of the Genesis Block, marking the beginning of the crypto revolution. As the first cryptocurrency, Bitcoin laid the foundation for the entire ecosystem. Today, Bitcoin is both a payment method and a popular investment, used for remittances, diversification, and more. Its decentralized design ensures security, transparency, and censorship resistance.

Bitcoin runs on a blockchain, a public ledger that records all transactions across a network of computers. Miners play a crucial role by validating transactions and securing the network through a process called Proof of Work (PoW). They compete to solve complex mathematical puzzles, and the winner adds a new block of transactions to the blockchain, earning newly minted BTCs as a reward. This decentralized system ensures that no single entity controls Bitcoin, making it secure, transparent, and resistant to censorship.

Bitcoin halving is a pre-programmed event that occurs every 210,000 blocks (roughly every four years). During a halving, the reward miners receive for adding new blocks to the blockchain is cut in half. This mechanism is designed to control Bitcoin’s supply, which is capped at 21 million coins, ensuring scarcity and protecting against inflation. When Bitcoin launched in 2009, miners earned 50 BTC per block. After four halvings, the reward is now 3.125 BTC per block. The next halving is expected in 2028, further reducing the issuance rate and potentially impacting Bitcoin’s value.

Bitcoin is often compared to gold because of its scarcity and durability. With a fixed supply of 21 million coins, Bitcoin is immune to inflation, making it an attractive store of value. Its decentralized nature and global accessibility also contribute to its reputation as “digital gold.” Many investors view Bitcoin as a hedge against economic uncertainty and a long-term investment to preserve wealth.

FAQ

Everything you need to know about buying, holding, and using Bitcoin on Venga.

  • You can buy Bitcoin online in a few minutes with the Venga app. Download the app, create your account and verify your identity, then choose Bitcoin (BTC) and the amount in euros you want to buy. Transfer euros from your bank account via SEPA or Instant SEPA, and once your money arrives, Venga automatically completes your Bitcoin purchase. Your BTC is then stored in your Venga account, where you can hold it, sell it for euros or send it to another Bitcoin wallet.

  • Buying Bitcoin (BTC) is safer when you use a regulated platform. Venga is authorised by the CNMV, Spain's financial regulator, as a crypto-asset service provider (CASP) under the EU's MiCA regulation. This means Venga must follow EU rules on how client assets are protected and how information is presented. Your Bitcoin is held separately from Venga's own assets, and Venga uses identity verification, device and account security checks, monitoring and screening tools, blockchain analytics and other risk-based measures to help detect and prevent fraud and money laundering. Regulation doesn't remove market risk: the price of Bitcoin can go down as well as up, and you could lose the money you invest.

  • No, you don't need to buy a whole Bitcoin. Each BTC can be divided into much smaller units, so you can buy a fraction of one, starting from 10€. This means you can start investing in Bitcoin with an amount you're comfortable with, whatever the current Bitcoin price in euros. Before you confirm, Venga shows you exactly how much BTC you'll receive, the price and any fees.

  • Buying Bitcoin (BTC) on Venga has a 0.8% fee on the amount you buy. The full cost of your BTC purchase, including the fee and the price you'll pay, is always shown before you confirm, with no hidden fees. If you later send BTC to an external wallet, a network fee applies, which goes to the network rather than to Venga. You can see a full breakdown of Bitcoin fees in the Fees and Pricing Transparency Section.
